Kilowatt-Hour & Natural Gas Distribution Tax Electronic Filing System

 Kilowatt-hour tax and natural gas distribution tax returns are filed electronically via the Ohio Business Gateway (Ohio Business Gateway). The Ohio Business Gateway (OBG) offers electronic registration and filing tools for many taxes and other programs. For state government, each electronic return saves processing costs and taxpayer dollars.

Registration required?

Yes. Taxpayers must create a username to access the Ohio Business Gateway system. The federal employer identification number (FEIN) or social security number (SSN), business contact information, and the primary user’s contact information must be provided.  Please call the Ohio Department of Taxation at 855-466-3921 (option 5) if you need assistance.

Filing on OBG:

  1. Log in to your OBG account.
  2. Select “Kilowatt-Hour Tax – Self-Assessing Purchaser”, “Kilowatt-Hour Tax”, or “Natural Gas Distribution Tax” from the "Start a Transaction" tab.
  3. Enter your tax account number as prompted.
  4. Enter the kilowatt-hours distributed (electric distributors) or consumed (self-assessing purchasers), or MCF'’s distributed (by tier, except aggregate-elect taxpayers) Note: The system will calculate the tax for SAPs and aggregate-elect MCF filers; electric distributors and non-aggregate MCF filers will also need to enter the tax by tier.
  5. If an electric distributor, enter KWHs distributed to each SAP in the SAP schedule.
  6. Review and file your return and/or pay using OBG (see below).

Ways to pay:

  1. ACH debit. You will need your bank’s routing number and account number.
  2. ACH credit.  You can still pay through the Treasurer of Ohio’s website. Please refer to the Treasurer of Ohio’s website: tos.ohio.gov for more detail.

File amended returns.
