Sarah O'Leary

SarahSarah E. O’Leary was appointed interim Tax Commissioner of the Ohio Department of Taxation by Governor Mike DeWine in January 2023.

Prior to serving as interim Tax Commissioner, O’Leary served as Chief Legal Counsel, Deputy Tax Commissioner, and Chief of Staff of the Department for four years where she oversaw the legal, legislative and communications operations for the agency. Additionally, she was designated as the Department’s Chief Ethics Officer.

O’Leary has been with the Department since 2003 and has held various leadership positions over her career, including serving as the Tax Program Executive over the Business and Excise Tax Divisions, overseeing all aspects of numerous state taxes accounting for more than $16.5 billion of Ohio’s tax revenue. In a prior position, she served as legal counsel for various business and excise taxes. She is a frequent presenter at national conferences on various tax issues.

Sarah holds a J.D. from the University of Toledo College of Law and a B.A. in English from John Carroll University. She lives in Worthington with her husband and two children.
